Coming back from the dead, here's a typeface I designed for class. It's inspired by the genuine ancient alphabet of the Philippines baybayin. I also took some influences from the Hiligaynon culture, an ethnic group of Filipinos who are known to be gentle and kind. Baylan is the Visayan (Filipino people who lives in Visayas which is a group of islands in the Philippines) term for spirit medium. I decided to name my typeface with that to describe part of the ancient Philippine culture which is rich with folklores and tales of the supernatural.
The biggest challenge of this project was maintaining consistency especially with the round quality of the design. I really wanted to emphasize the compassionate and cheerful nature of the culture I derived inspiration from. For the most part, I believe I succeeded. Still could use some fine-tuning though.
